The Komatsu way: Open Innovation Strategy for being “DANTOTSU(the best & unrivaled)
—The roles of CTO Offices and the challenges facing them in industry-academia(I-I,I-A) col-laboration and their future.
Summary
Holding up the slogan “Value creation through innovation” as one of its pillars of its growth strat-egy, Komatsu, a construction equipment giant, is aiming to provide new value to customers and to create the “GEMBA (the workplace where Komatsu’s customers operate equipment) “ in the future through “Dantotsu Products”, “Dantotsu Service” and “Dantotsu Solution”other companies cannot follow easily. As a technology strategy to achieve this, it is actively promoting “open innovation” activities for adopting external technologies that don’t exist in the company. After the reorganization of the company’s R&D division, the importance of the role of the CTO office that is charged with finding technologies and serving as a bridge between inside and out-side organizations( big companies, startups, universities, and venture capital funds)has increased. We will ask about the roles of and the challenges for the CTO office, including communication, information gathering, technology exploration & matching, and intellectual property management and their future.
